Dear 18 year old beautiful self,

I want you to know that I totally get what you’re going through right now. As you step onto your career path, there’s this mix of excitement and overwhelming anxiety that can weigh you down. It feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, and it’s completely normal to feel that way.

I remember exactly how it felt to be in your shoes, juggling work and personal life while dealing with those dreaded panic attacks. It’s tough to constantly worry about making mistakes and living up to everyone’s expectations. Sometimes, you just want to find a quiet corner to hide in and let all of those overwhelming emotions pour out in tears.

But here’s the thing Gemma, you are not alone in this struggle. So many others out there are going through the same rollercoaster of emotions. It might not seem like it, especially when you’re stuck in the midst of your own anxiety, but trust me, there are people who understand.

When I found the courage to open up to a close colleague, it was the first step toward seeking help. I decided to reach out to a therapist, and that turned out to be a game-changer. Learning how to manage my anxiety and panic attacks gave me a sense of safety. It made a world of difference and prevented my anxiety from taking over my life.

I want to share some precious tips that have worked wonders for me, and I hope they’ll help you too;

  • Take some time to identify your triggers. Is it certain environments, social situations, certain people, or maybe even memories from the past? Knowing your triggers can help you develop strategies to cope with them.
  • Give relaxation techniques a shot. When anxiety starts to creep in, try deep breathing exercises, muscle relaxation, or visualisation techniques. Believe me, they can work wonders in calming your mind and body.
  • Talk to someone, don’t keep everything bottled up inside, my friend. Find someone you trust, a friend, a family member, or maybe even a therapist. Talk to them about what you’re going through. Sharing your feelings with someone who cares can make a world of difference. They can provide the support and guidance you need on this journey.
  • Prioritise self care and never forget to take care of yourself. Make self-care a priority. Get enough rest, find time to exercise, and do things that bring you joy. It’s crucial to create moments where you can switch off from work and give yourself the love and care you deserve. Self-care is a powerful tool in managing anxiety and panic attacks
  • Lastly, please, please, be kind to yourself. You’re only human, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Don’t let your anxiety and panic attacks define you or hold you back from going after your dreams. You have so much strength within you, and I know you can overcome these challenges and reach for the stars.

My beautiful friend, take a deep breath. You are destined for amazing things, and your anxiety will not stand in your way. With practice and support, you can manage your anxiety and panic attacks. You can thrive in your career. It may take time, but trust that help is out there and you have a whole community of support around you.

Remember, you’re not alone, and your feelings matter. Keep pushing forward, and never forget how incredible you are.

With all my love,

Someone who’s been there (and still is sometimes)

Gemma x
